Russ Starts A Song Every Week Series with ‘SMALL TALK’: Listen

Bow now, we all know that the trajectory of Russ’ career changed back in 2015 when he decided one day that he will release one song every week on his SoundCloud to build buzz for his music, following a lackluster run with several mixtapes.

Fast forward, the Atlanta based singer and rapper is now a multi Platinum artist with countless plaques and several Billboard charting singles. For the past year or so, Russ has been releasing music quite frequently but a few days ago, he announced that he will be back to his 2015 grind of releasing one song every single week.

He kickstarts the series tonight with a new song titled ‘SMALL TALK’ which he originally previewed on social media earlier this week. The sample heavy track was produced by Russ himself — listen to him going crazy below.

Aside from music, he is also keeping himself busy with business ventures. His latest investment is in MixedByAli’s producer and engineer-friendly platform, EngineEars.

Watch Drake’s Son Adonis React to LeBron James’ Highlights

Drake, Adonis, and LeBron James

Adonis is locked in.

Drake’s son may only be three years old, but he’s already learning from the best. Drake shared a video of his baby boy marveling at LeBron James. In the clip, Adonis is glued to the laptop screen as he watches a YouTube highlights reel of LeBron’s top 35 plays.

At one point, Adonis’ jaw drops while witnessing King James in action. “Oh my God! You see?” he tells his father in amazement.

LeBron himself reposted the video on his Instagram Story. “Nephew [locked] in!” he wrote along with a series of emojis including the crown and flame.

Drake also posted an Instagram Story of Adonis dribbling a basketball on his OVO home court. Adonis, decked out in a blue sweatsuit and Jordans, does a spin before sinking the shot.

Drake may have a future baller on his hands. Last month, the proud dad gave fans a glimpse of Adonis’ athletic skills when he shared video of his son shooting hoops at home.

‘Claustrophobic’ walks us through the mind of Smba

In what has been somewhat of an uphill battle, mental health awareness in modern music is just beginning to become more widely accepted and appreciated.  Chicago rapper Smba has long been a proponent of anti-bullying and mental health awareness campaigns, having recently raised over $100,000 for the Anti-Bullying Project in 2020 by curating a show with fashion designers and fellow musicians to raise awareness for the cause.  Already an accomplished philanthropist and acclaimed lyricist at just 18- years-old, Claustrophobic EP takes their artistry a step further by offering a deeply personal look at the mind of the young artist during an anxiety attack.

The 19-minute EP, meant to be listened through in one sitting, is an ambitious project conveying a wide range of emotions.  Detailing a battle with anxiety and negative thoughts, the project contains tracks that range from jumbled and jumpy, to calm and reassured.  Beginning with the tense and frenzied “What If,” Smba hits the ground running with a strikingly emotional run of anxious thoughts brilliantly delivered over stark and touching piano.  Raw emotion seeps through the track and flows perfectly into the more slow and melancholic “Sun” that follows, a piece reminiscent of the early 2000s Chicago hip-hop scene.

A major strength of the project is its seamless trackflow that demands to be listened to without interruption almost as if it existed as a single 19 minute song. Another extremely strong and emotional high point of the EP, “I Know,” is a tender and cinematically orchestral song of Smba bearing a piece of themself to the audience and really hits home as a scene of audio cinema that resolves many anxious thoughts from the first half of the EP.  “Alone in my Room” is a raw and emotional tribute to Smba’s late sister consisting of the naturally melodic voice of the artist over scratchy guitar strums and bluesy riffs.  Penultimate track “New Day” is a fiery and slow-building stream of thoughts not unlike the opening track, but now we see a more focused and repentant version of the artist as he comes down into the final track.  “Better Me” is the natural conclusion of the project, a sweeping anthem focused on coming to terms with shortcomings and rising up to become better as a result of them.

You’d be hard-pressed to find another teenage artist that can put together a more ambitious project than Smba has done with Claustrophobic.  Thematic and richly realized, the Chicago artist’s second EP is hands down his best work yet and deserves 19 minutes of your day to think and ruminate on the effects of anxiety and negativity on everyday life.

Birdman Reveals How Much Cash Money Earns From Its Masters

Birdman is making millions off Cash Money’s masters.

During an interview with Wallo of “Where’s Wallo” (via Complex), the Cash Money Records boss revealed how much money he earns annually from Cash Money’s current and former roster of artists, which includes Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj.

“We license the music, I just started letting people sample my shit. So yeah, it’s a gang of ways you can make money with your masters,” Birdman said.

He went on to reveal that the figure is in the tens of millions. “We generate $20-30 million a year just on our masters,” added Birdman.

Cash Money has come under fire in the past from its own artists including Lil Wayne. In 2015, Weezy sued the label for $51 million. In 2018, they settled their legal dispute for an undisclosed amount. Tyga also filed a lawsuit in 2018 for millions in unpaid royalties.

Last year, Wayne sold his masters to Universal Music Group for a reported $100 million.

While he continues to make bank, Birdman is also giving back. Last May, amid the COVID-19 crisis, he and his brother, Cash Money co-founder Ronald “Slim” Williams, donated over $225,000 to help pay rent for hundreds of subsidized tenants and families in New Orleans.

Jeremih, Lil Wayne, and DJ Khaled

Bless up.

On the heels of his album release, DJ Khaled teams up with Lil Wayne and Jeremih in his latest video for “Thankful,” the opening track off his 12th studio album Khaled Khaled.

In the uplifting clip, Khaled counts his blessings as he walks the lush grounds of his tropical paradise. He reflects on his early days hustling mixtapes and producing beats, while the newly-married Weezy recounts his humble beginnings. Jeremih, who overcame a near-death battle with COVID-19 last year, also has a lot to be grateful for.

“And I know that somebody been praying for me / Head above ground and I could’ve been six feet deep,” he sings.

Along with the video, Khaled shared an inspiring message. “This my intro of my album. This one is personal so the video needed to be personal as well,” he said. “It’s everything I represent. Believe in yourself, never give up and ALL praise to the most High.”

Khaled previously dropped videos for “Sorry Not Sorry” with JAY-Z and Nas, as well as “Where You Come From” featuring Buju Banton, Capleton, and Bounty Killer.

More visuals are on the way. Khaled recently went in front of the lens to shoot a video for his Justin Bieber and 21 Savage collaboration, “Let It Go.”

The Weeknd Still Boycotting Grammys After Rule Change

The Weeknd will continue to boycott the Grammys.

Last week, the Recording Academy announced that it would eliminate the “secret” nominations review committees. Now the “Blinding Lights” singer has responded to the rule change. In a statement to Variety, he called the decision an “important start,” while doubling down on his previous comments.

“The trust has been broken for so long between the Grammy organization and artists that it would be unwise to raise a victory flag,” he said. “I think the industry and public alike need to see the transparent system truly at play for the win to be celebrated, but it’s an important start.”

However, The Weeknd will still withhold his music from consideration in the future. “I remain uninterested in being a part of the Grammys, especially with their own admission of corruption for all these decades. I will not be submitting in the future.”

His manager, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, added, “No change comes without a voice heard. I’m just proud of Abel for standing up for what he believes in. I was in a shock when all this happened but now I see it clearly, and I’m glad we stood for our beliefs.”

In November, The Weeknd blasted the Grammys after being shut out of the 2021 nominations despite the success of his latest album, After Hours.

“The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…” he tweeted, while vowing to boycott the awards. “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he told The New York Times.

The “secret” committees have faced growing criticism in recent years. These anonymous expert committees were put in place to review the initial nomination choices from voting members and ultimately decide who makes the cut in 61 of the Grammys’ 84 categories.

“It’s been a year of unprecedented, transformational change for the Recording Academy, and I’m immensely proud to be able to continue our journey of growth with these latest updates to our awards process,” Harvey Mason Jr., the Academy’s interim president and CEO, said after the decision. “This is a new Academy, one that is driven to action and that has doubled down on the commitment to meeting the needs of the music community.”
