A$AP Rocky Documentary ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

A$AP Rocky’s 2019 stint in a Swedish prison made international headlines.

Now the Harlem rapper is sharing his story in a new documentary Stockholm Syndrome, which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival as part of its Juneteenth programming on Sunday, June 13, at 8 p.m.

Directed by The Architects, the 105-minute film covers Rocky’s music and his experience with the Swedish judicial system through archival footage, interviews, animation, and live concert footage, with appearances from Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, Tyler, the Creator, Michèle Lamy, and A$AP Ferg.

According to a press release, “Stockholm Syndrome chronicles the meteoric rise of this contemporary trendsetter, capturing the exuberance of youth and urgency of hip-hop in equal parts, before taking a detour into darkness.”

Rocky spent over a month in a Swedish detention center following a street brawl in Stockholm in June 2019. The incident caught the attention of Kanye West and former President Donald Trump, who negotiated for his release. He was eventually found guilty by a Swedish court, but did not have to serve additional jail time.

In a recent interview with GQ, Rocky said the support he received “made me happy while being in there, because when you in jail, you feel like nobody cares.”

He also remained productive and hopeful despite being confined to a cell for 23 and a half hours a day. “I never thought that things that I imagined while I was in jail would come true,” he said. “And everything that I envisioned in prison came to fruition. ‘Cause I guess I manifested it. And I prayed! I really wanted to bless that situation and move on from it in a positive way. I was praying to stay strong, and God got me through shit like it was nothing! That shit was nothing.”

Rihanna’s boyfriend is now readying his new album, tentatively titled All Smiles, which is about 90 percent complete. “It’s all about the evolution,” he told GQ of his new music. “I just want to make some good music, that’s all. I want to feel great about doing it, and I want people to feel great about hearing it.”

The annual Puerto Rican Day Parade is set to go down in New York City this June 13. But before the Boricua community gathers together on the streets of Manhattan to celebrate their culture, Nike got some heat for them to wear on 5th Avenue.

Two years after Nike scrapped plans for their much-criticized Air Force 1 “Puerto Rico,” the Swoosh brand returns with a remixed version of their classic Air Max 97 OG “Silver Bullet” that pays homage to the Nuyoricans that help make New York City that much more culturally beautiful. Featuring the Puerto Rican flag on the tongue’s pull-tab and air-sole bubble, the sneakers will definitely be seen on the feet of many Ricans when the festivities roll down from 44th street to 79th street next week.

But that’s not all.

“The phrase ‘Aquí Me Quedo,’ translated to “I’ll Stay Here,” is printed on the insole, a message reflecting the community’s historically strong connection to New York City.”

These joints are going to fly off the shelves.

The Air Max 97 “Puerto Rico” and a commemorative T-shirt are set to release on June 5 on SNKRS and at select retailers. Will you be picking up a pair? Check out pics of the kicks and let us know if you’ll be checking for these when they drop this weekend.

Diddy and Yung Miami Spark Dating Rumors

Are Diddy and Yung Miami hip-hop’s newest couple?

The rap mogul, 51, and City Girl, 27, are sparking dating rumors after they were spotted showing PDA at a birthday party for Quality Control CEO Pierre “Pee” Thomas in Atlanta on Wednesday (June 2). Taking to Instagram, Yung Miami aka Caresha Brownlee shared a photo of her and Diddy holding hands while walking down a staircase in formalwear.

“It’s a whole lot of money in this mf!” she captioned the IG slideshow.

Yung Miami’s followers were surprised to see their intimate exchange and questioned if the two, who are over 20 years apart, were dating. “Hold on why y’all holding hands,” asked one fan, while Diddy’s son Justin Combs commented with flame emojis.

Puff is seemingly single, while Caresha has been in an on-again, off-again relationship with producer Southside. The two welcomed their daughter, Summer Miami, in October 2019.

Neither has commented on the romance rumors. Diddy recently raised eyebrows when he posted a throwback photo of him with his ex Jennifer Lopez amid her reunion with Ben Affleck.

Pee’s black-tie birthday bash was a star-studded affair. Yung Miami’s fellow City Girl JT was also in attendance, along with Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, Gucci Mane, Lil Durk, Jack Harlow, and Teyana Taylor.

Nicki Minaj Says Drake and Lil Wayne ‘Washed’ Her on ‘Seeing Green’

Nicki Minaj is showing her humility.

On Friday, the rap queen released her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty to streaming services for the first time featuring three new tracks including “Seeing Green” with Drake and Lil Wayne.

In a Q&A with fans, Nicki said that her Young Money brothers “washed” her on the track, and she’s not afraid to admit it.

“All I know is that they washed me on #SeeingGreen,” tweeted Nicki. “I’m a woman enough to admit when I’ve been washed on a track by the Greats.”

However, Nicki feels that she has outshined Drizzy and Weezy on their past collaborations. “And it’s ok #Barbz I’ve washed them b4. We’ll live through this one,” she said, adding, “I was still a lil rusty I washed them in my head on #Fractions.”

She also revealed that she recorded around seven different versions of “Seeing Green” before settling on her verse. “Honestly I kept coming back to it for like a week. I have like 7 diff versions of my verse on that song,” she told fans.

During her Instagram Live on Thursday night, Nicki said that it was Drake who helped her overcome her writer’s block after she gave birth. “He single handedly got me out of my writer’s block, and I’m never gonna forget it and I’m gonna shout it to the fu**ing world from the mountain tops,” said Nicki. “He’s a fu**in’ genius as a musical artist but also as a human.”

J. Cole Reveals Why He No Longer Views Drake and Kendrick Lamar as Competition

J. Cole is no longer trying to compete.

Fresh off the release of The Off-Season, the Dreamville champ paid a visit to “The ETCs” podcast with Kevin Durant and Eddie Gonzalez, where he reflected on his career and relationship with fellow rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which has evolved over time. While they came up together, he has learned to value friendship over competitiveness.

“These are the guys that push you, and you gotta push them,” said Cole. “I was so competitive early on that, like, even though we were all friends, I’ve never been a reach out, I’ve never been that person, especially when it’s competition involved. It’s almost like working out together.”

When he was younger, he had a more competitive mentality, which has changed with age. “I guess in the NBA in the past that was unheard of. Like, ‘Why would I work out with this ni**a? I’m trying to destroy this ni**a.’ That was kind of my mentality early on,” he said. “But as I’ve gotten older, I realize that no one is truly my peer or can relate to what I’m going through in life more than these people right here–just in terms of whatever pressures there might be… Nobody can really relate to that like these dudes, and I really genuinely f**k with these dudes.”

He was able to stop viewing them as competition and more as friends. “I’ve been absolutely trying to make an effort as time goes on, to strip the competition from me,” he said. “I’m more interested in the relationship ’cause I also see a time when I’m not doing this. That seems very realistic to me.”

Added Cole, “I’m more interested in the genuine relationship. Before I was interested in the competition. Before I was just interested in putting pressure or responding to pressure… It’s just less competition in my mind ’cause ni**as is old, bro.”

However, he always had respect for his peers. “It was always a respect thing. Now it’s just more of a wisdom thing where it’s like, ‘Yo, you can never have it all.’”

“Michael Jordan will never be universally hailed as the greatest player of all time–and that’s insane. And LeBron James will never be universally hailed as the greatest player of all time–and that’s insane. You’ll never have it, so it comes with age to realize that like, ‘Yo, what are you even worried about?’ ‘Cause you’re just setting yourself up for suffering.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, Cole opened up about fulfilling his professional basketball dreams. On Sunday, the Fayetteville rapper made his debut playing for the Rwanda Patriots BBC in the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League.

Americans got served another reminder that the vaccine does not make you 100% immune to COVID-19. Bill Maher has tested positive after getting his shots.

As spotted on The Daily Beast political commentator will have to take a timeout in the next coming days. Earlier this week Real Time With Bill Maher released a statement on their official Twitter account saying the New York City native has contracted the virus. According to the post he arrived for a shoot last week it was determined that production had to be shut down immediately.

“The Friday, May 14th taping of Real Time With Bill Maher has been cancelled. Bill tested positive during weekly staff PCR testing for COVID. He is fully vaccinated and as a result is asymptomatic and feels fine. Real Time production has taken every precaution following COVID CDC guidelines. No other staff or crew members have tested positive at this time. The show will be rescheduled at a later date” the statement said.

After the story broke Bill took the time to update his fans on his status via a Tweet. “Thanks to all wishing me get well – hard to do since I feel perfectly fine, but I appreciate it! Most upset about ending my streak going back to 1993 of never missing a Politically Incorrect or Real Time episode. Oh well, even Cal Ripken had to sit one out at some point.”

At this time it is unclear when production on the HBO show will commence again or if he will resume shooting from his backyard.

[Saturday Spotlight] John Wick + Fatt Father

Welcome back to another edition of our Saturday Spotlight series. Each week we review submissions from all over the globe, picking the best out of the batch to highlight at the end of the week. Our passion lies in finding the talent that’ll reshape (or maybe bring back old memories) how we look at rap music. We want to be the start of a long journey towards immortality.

Whether you’re a singer, a rapper, or a producer, all upcoming artists can submit music to us for Saturday Spotlight on this link.

John Wick

Detroit is a beautiful scene. The music coming out of there makes your heart race. It’s heist music, it’s meant to feel like you’re running out of the bank with a cash-filled duffle bag. On “Alex Russo”, John Wick hops on the city’s signature sound, riding the beat with muffled vocals. He’s raw and uncut. He wields blunt lyricism and vivid imagery that puts you in the middle of extreme tension. Check out his latest track below:

Fatt Father

Fatt Father is a deity in the streets. On his new single, “Raging Angel” his presence is accompanied by a chopped and looped choir, with their vocals heightened enough to pierce the heavens. Father treats every bar as if they were written in scripture. Not a single word is wasted with a cadence of a rap heavyweight. The track doesn’t even reach a minute and a half in length, but the power behind the bars packs enough punch to cave in your chest. Check out his track below and the full album on his Bandcamp here.

Through our artist discovery platform Saturday Spotlight, we have discovered some amazing talent in the past including Russ, Ty Dolla Sign, Mez, IDK, Victoria Monét and Trap Beckham to name just a few. In most cases, coverage on HHNM was their first look among media outlets. Find the submission guidelines here.
